Perry was born on July 25, 1968 in Chicago, Illinois to Laurie Metcalf Perry and Jeff Perry. In the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as seen by flashback) her mother played Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first TV roles. Her parents, however, did not permit her to perform until she turned an adult due to the negative effects that stress could affect their child. Perry claimed that she was too shy to act in high school but began performing at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred to the university from Boston University. Perry was a graduate of Boston University, moved to New York in search of TV roles. Her small part was on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Then, homelessness brought her back to California in search of theater jobs. She appeared on Broadway as a part of The Other Place with her mother in 2013. In 2015, she appeared alongside Kevin McKidd alongside her mother in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer-winning Drama Anna Christie. The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble is located in West Los Angeles. Perry starred in nine episodes of ABC's drama The Family. In 2017, Perry starred in an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal along with her father. She played an older Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was an additional portrayal that was younger of her mother. The part was offered to her through audition, despite the fact that she was a cousin to the character.
